The Revolution Starts Small (and Usually from the Kitchen Bench)

Not all revolutions come with fireworks.

Some start with cauliflower in a blender. Others begin with the challenge of getting your kids to eat their veggies. And sometimes it’s on Nonna’s balcony on a sunny afternoon.

That’s the kind of revolution I live for.

Because when small CPG (consumer packaged goods) brands win – consumers win, innovation wins, the industry wins. And we need more of that.

This article highlights three emerging CPG brands that are quietly, but powerfully disrupting their categories. They’re not waiting for headlines or VC cheques. They’re starting. And that’s what makes them ones to watch.

1. EatKinda — Redefining Indulgence with Cauliflower Ice Cream

Yes, you read that right: cauliflower ice cream.

Co‑founders Mrinali and Jen are flipping the script on frozen treats, and tackling food waste while they’re at it. By using ‘imperfect’ cauliflower that would otherwise go to waste, they’ve created a product that’s plant‑based, tastes really good, and is helping New Zealanders reduce the 157,389 tonnes of food that is thrown away every year.

This brand is one to watch because they’re not just proving that sustainability can scale. They’re showing that consumers are ready for it.

2. Welly Kids – A Snack Born from a Common Challenge

Jarahad Valeri saw the gap: we’re all busy, we all want our kids to eat better, but we don’t have time. So he created Welly Kids – gut‑healthy, fruit and veggie‑packed bites that parents can feel good about and kids want to eat.

Welly didn’t set out to be just another kids’ snack in the health food aisle. They listened – really listened – to what parents wanted and needed. It’s a powerful reminder that the best brands don’t just launch products, they solve everyday problems that matter.

3. Solbevi – A Spritz Inspired by the Past, Made for Now

Stefan Di Benedetto didn’t set out to beat Aperol. He just wanted something that did not exist in a can; something that captured the feeling of sitting on his Nonna’s sundrenched balcony surrounded by friends.

The result? Solbevi – a canned spritz inspired by his family’s Limoncello recipe, now taking on the giants at their own game.

It’s proof that authenticity, flavour and modern values can live in the same can – and that you don’t need to reinvent the wheel to be considered innovative.

The Hidden Cost of Ignoring Emerging Brands

It’s easy to overlook the importance of small CPG brands in a landscape dominated by household names and private labels. But there are real consequences when we fail to empower early‑stage founders:

  • Missed breakthroughs – Many major category shifts (plant‑based meat, clean beauty, alternative drinks) started with small teams, not boardrooms.
  • Homogenisation – If the same players dominate, everything starts tasting, looking and feeling the same.
  • Wealth concentration – More profits go to shareholders of mega‑corporations, less money stays in local communities.
  • Fewer jobs / less job creation – Young companies (those less than5 years old) are often responsible for a disproportionate share of new jobs.
  • Stagnant shelves – Without challenger brands pushing boundaries, you get the same products year after year, and if you’re lucky, the same product in a different flavour!
  • Less choice – For consumers with unique dietary needs, flavour preferences or ethical sourcing demands, fewer nimble brands = fewer options.
  • Higher prices – Without competition from agile challengers, big brands/retailers have less pressure to innovate or keep prices fair.
  • Loss of authenticity – Emerging brands often bring founder stories, community roots and value‑driven missions. Without them, brands become faceless and generic.
  • Weakened supply‑chains – Over‑reliance on a few enormous players creates fragility in the system.
  • Australia as a test market – Not a consequence, but an opportunity. Australia is one of the best test markets for CPG innovation thanks to its sophisticated retail and diverse demographics. We need to make sure emerging CPG brands are taking advantage of this.

How to Support Smaller CPG Brands (Because You Can)

If you believe the future of CPG is being shaped by founders, here’s how you can help:

Buy where you can

      – Support difference‑making brands when you spot them in store,  online or at a market. Every tray, every can, every snack matters.
  1. Ask questions at retail level –  If you have access to Australian retailers, ask them the question “what emerging Aussie start‑ups are you stocking?” That prompts change.
  2. Share on social – Found a brand you love? Tag them. Post a quick story. Social proof matters more to a bootstrapped brand than the big guys.
  3. Provide feedback – Founders are still close to the brand. Drop feedback. That’s how products evolve.
  4. Invest (where appropriate) – If you’re in a position to invest or introduce, think early‑stage. Your network might be their next shelf‑space or retailer contact.
  5. Platform partnerships – As a retailer, distributor or buyer: give small brands a chance. Trial space or a local feature.
  6. Education & advocacy – Talk about these brands, write about them, champion them in your networks. Word‑of‑mouth still holds huge power.

Small Brands? They’re the Future

If you’re an emerging CPG founder, let this be your nudge:

Your idea doesn’t need to be perfect. Your pitch doesn’t need to be polished. You just need to start.

And if you’re a consumer or industry leader, support the ones doing it differently. The ones building with guts, purpose and a whole lot of kitchen‑bench grit.

That’s how the revolution begins.
